Automated Phone Calls |

Automated phone calls are the most cost-effective way to reach your constituents and customers. The cost is minimal compared to other media, and the effectiveness is unsurpassed. Automated calling will allow your campaign to target your message to your constituents, give them valuable information, and help you capture valuable data to win your election. Also, unlike other media, you will be able to reach your constituents exactly at the time of day of your choosing. You can place your calls in the middle of the day to target answering machines, or in the evening, to target live people. |
How do I get a auto-call list: Depending on your county, you can get a list of registered voters with phone numbers from the secretary of state's office or your county auditor. If your state does not make this available, many candidates can get a list from the local county party offices (republican, democrat, etc.). Lastly, should these options not be available, there are multiple online resources where you can buy a list. How do I record my message: Once your order is placed and your list has been emailed to your account representative, you will receive instructions for leaving your message. Leaving a message works similar to leaving a voicemail, but this is a voicemail to your voters. Options are available to erase, re record, and listen to your message. Campaignpros.com recommends 20-30 second calls. Longer calls are often only partially listened to. |

What should a good automated phone call say? Many candidates are unsure what should be said in a good automated phone call. The key here is short and sweet, under 25 seconds is recommended. Most candidates should write out their message and practices it for timing before recording their call. In addition to this, there are a few key components that every call should include.

Most people wince at the very utterance of the words automated phone calls. Their dislike of this device is not unfounded. I must admit that early in my consulting career, I too joined the loyal ranks of those who hated the rob-o-calls, as they are sometimes known. I soon changed my mind after a bond referendum in Florida (Bond referendums usually turn out a notoriously low number of votes).
I reluctantly gave into my client’s desire to do auto calls. It would have been hard to match my surprise when I heard that the election had turned out more people than the previous presidential year. While I know the election wasn't won purely on the efforts of the auto call, these calls played a major role in the campaign turn out. Since then, I have recommended them to all my clients.
Auto calls are a powerful tool with a nice, low price tag. Depending on your list size, you can get them for as little as $.045 each. I can’t think of any other way to get in front of the voter so inexpensively. Furthermore, unlike yard signs or literature, the cost to a candidate’s valuable time is minimal.
The best way I’ve found to use the calls is to remind people of an event or an election. A good call might go something like this:
Hi, my name is Joe Candidate. I’m calling with a friendly reminder that tomorrow is election day. As you go to the polls, please consider voting for me, Joe Candidate for Mayor. I’m looking to cut taxes, stop over spending, and work together better with our county government.
Thank you for your time, and I hope to see you at the polls tomorrow.
Remember to vote for Joe Candidate on November 4th.
There are a couple of key items to consider when making your call:
Rule #1 – Keep it short and sweet
Rule #2 – Tell them why they should vote for you with conciseness.
Rule #3 – Mention the campaign name 2 or 3 times.
Rule #4 – Thank them for their time and drop your name and the date one more time.
As a general rule, calls should not be more the 25 seconds long or people will be more annoyed than informed. You can have either the candidate do the call or someone who is well-liked do the call.
In short, if you want to get into voter homes with your message, you can’t beat the speed of turn around, the cost, and the effectiveness of an automated phone call.
